What Is a Hedge Fund? At its core, a hedge fund is a pooled investment fund that uses a wide range of strategies to generate returns, often with much fewer restrictions than  mutual funds. Global macro : Making bets on interest rates, currencies, or commodities based on macroeconomic and geopolitical data.
